CMCC to encounter Australia’s Cosmos Hockey Club

The CMCC Veterans Hockey Team is set to meet the Cosmos Hockey Club from Melbourne, Australia on 3rdNovember 2017 at 4.30 pm at the Astroturf.

The visiting team consists of hockey players of over 60 years and have been travelling around the world playing in Perth – Australia, Singapore, Culcutta – India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Their previous visit to the island was in 2014.

The touring party comprises Julian Maugey (Coach), Ian Jennings (Capt), Mohan Selvaratnam (Vice Capt.), Michele Lombardo, Peter Lombardo (Coordinator), Grenville Dawson (Team Mgr.), Ian Freeman, Eugene Rebeiro, Deryck Claudius, Kevin Redden and Douglas David. Incidentally, Mohan Selveratnam is a former CMCC team member and is the key person in organizing the tour to Sri Lanka.

Masters, or veterans hockey is organized throughout Australia and the Cosmos Hockey Club has been a part of it since inception. The concept gives an opportunity to former players to continue playing the sport they love.

The match with CMCC is part of the club’s 145th anniversary celebrations. The first Cricket Club to be established in Ceylon, CMCC has played an active role in the sports arena of the country. At the advent of its anniversary celebrations, the club hosted a netball carnival, which saw the introduction of the ‘running-time’ concept. A Hockey Carnival will also be held concurrently to the anniversary on the 26th November 2017 with 20 clubs taking part.
